What is a pharmacy delivery driver?
A pharmacy delivery driver is a key member of the pharmacy team. They collect medicines and other products from the pharmacy and plan the safe and timely delivery of those medicines to patients within the law.
What do I have to do to become a pharmacy delivery driver?
There are no set entry requirements for the pharmacy delivery driver training programme and it is one of the entry routes into a career in pharmacy.
You will need to be employed either part or full time in a pharmacy and study with the support and supervision of a pharmacist to undertake the training. This is important as you will be expected to put your training into practice. It is vocational training rather than academic training and your new knowledge will enable you to understand how medicines are safely purchased and supplied to patients with the advice that they need to use them safely.
If you are not sure if pharmacy is the right career for you it may help you to explore what’s involved. You could speak to the pharmacist in your local pharmacy to find out more. Some pharmacies may allow you to observe what happens for a period of time. Of course, you can always talk to us! We are always happy to talk training and we are very friendly. You could try our short, FREE training programme, Introduction To Pharmacy and learn more that way. Just place an order and we’ll send it through to you.
What does a pharmacy delivery driver do?
A pharmacy delivery driver carries out a range of tasks that focus around the delivery of medicines and sometimes products to patients homes. It can be a challenging role and an understanding of how patients perceive the pharmacy based on how you act is important. Their work often involves the following:
Liaison with the pharmacy team
Visiting the pharmacy on a regular basis to collect prescription medicines
Planning efficient travel routes for deliveries
Physically moving large quantities and sometimes heavy prescription items from the pharmacy into a delivery vehicle and from the vehicle into patients homes
Providing appropriate advice and support to patients at the point of delivery
Complying with regulations and legislation governing the supply of medicines
Providing the highest levels of customer service
Our training programme cover a wide range of topics including pharmacy regulation and legislation, conducting deliveries, staying safe and customer service.
When you have completed your pharmacy delivery driver training you’ll be helping patients everyday. As you gain in confidence you might decide that you’d like to develop your skills and work in the pharmacy, helping with the supply of retail products or prescription medicines. In that case you’d need to train as a medicines counter assistant or perhaps a dispensary assistant.
